On. The. Algorithm.
When I’m painting there is a visual algorithm playing in my head that is connected to what I am seeing. The abstraction is purposeful and sometimes the solution unattainable but the puzzle of it all makes it super satisfying when I finally crack it. It’s crazy that it can all hang on a single stroke. And a lot of the time in the final stages of a work, I have to be ballsy enough to say ‘fuck it’ and do it (the payoff is a wildly energised piece that ‘just’ works) at the risk of actually disabling the work and taking it in another direction and back to start... that kills me. It happens often. But when it pays off - when a slash of Pyrrole Red is the missing piece - it’s thrilling. That buzz is addictive. The dopamine is delicious.
